The Case for Purchasing New Tires

Why Buy Used Tires when you can get a set of Brand New Tires and Peace of Mind!

There's a lot to consider when purchasing tires. Outside of the brand and type of tire, there's the condition: new or used. At Atlantic Tire, we only sell new tires. That's an intentional business decision, and it's one we've made because we don't want you taking unnecessary risks with your safety or satisfaction. While a new tire dealer making the case for new tires isn't surprising, it is genuine. Used tires may cost less, but there are other factors you should look at when choosing your next set of tires. These include: the overall quality of the tire; the history of the tire; any warranties that come with the tire; and the safe performance of the tire.

The Quality of the Tire

Here's an expression you may have heard: "You should always invest in products that separate you from the ground, like shoes, beds, and tires." In other words, it's wise to invest in top quality products that contribute to your health and safety. With new tires, you know what you're getting and where they come from, while used tires involve a degree of risk and may not come with any guarantees, or often short ones if they do.

The Safe Performance of the Tire

Here's another expression you may know: "Where the rubber meets the road." This popular phrase is easy to hear without thinking too deeply on it. Often, you'll hear it in relation to the important role tires play on your vehicle. It's true. Your tires contribute to your safety while driving. That's why you need good tires installed. They're responsible for supporting your vehicle's weight, moving you toward your destination in rain or shine, and helping you come to a safe stop. Talk about job responsibilities!

There's no disputing that there's a lot riding on these four circles of rubber. By "a lot," we mean you and anyone riding with you—especially as you drive at higher speeds. While 55 mph and higher might not feel thrilling, it's a high speed for a tire to blow out. One contributing factor to flat tires is low tread. As tread wears down, tires become more susceptible to punctures. Used tires with low tread may save you money, but you also risk paying in another way: with your time while you wait on the roadside after a flat.

The History of the Tire

New tires don't hold any secrets in their past. They come from the manufacturer to the dealer. Since they were never used, there's no maintenance history to worry about. In contrast, you never know the history of a used tire for certain. Did the last owner rotate their tires every 3,000-5,000 miles, as recommended so the tires wear at an even rate? Did the tires come off a totaled vehicle or someone coming into the shop to sell them?

Tire Warranties & Guarantees

Most new tires come with a manufacturer's warranty in the event there is a defect, and many new tires include prorated mileage guarantees with (so long as you keep up on tire maintenance, which you should be doing). Some tire manufacturers even include perks like roadside assistance. With mileage warranties, it's easy to estimate how long your new tires will last based on how frequently you drive. In addition, you have peace of mind knowing you're guaranteed that amount of miles. With pre-owned tires, you don't know what to expect mileage-wise and you're out of luck in the event the tire doesn't last long. If you have to keep buying used tires because they don't last long, you'll eventually spend more time and money than you would purchasing a quality set of new tires.

At Atlantic Tire, we choose to sell new tires because as much as we trust our tire technicians to do an excellent job evaluating tire wear and condition, we know none of us can be certain the full history of any used tire. That's a risk we won't take, because we don't want you to take it, either. Our store stocks over 1,000 new tires in a variety of sizes. We're confident we can find a suitable match for you and your budget. We encourage you to check tire rebates and coupons for special deals that can help you save on new tires, as well. Your safety is important. Give yourself tires that provide long-term value and don't come with any surprises.

Atlantic Tire serves Baltimore, MD, Nottingham, MD, Perry Hall, MD, and surrounding areas.
